“While the gendered politics of technology access and the creative ways in which children are able to work as embodied interfaces is interesting – and perhaps needs more space than is afforded here – what remains interesting to me is how this story disrupts the regular narratives of techno-euphoria. It cannot be explained away merely in terms of usage. It cannot be used to claim radical social change in community and gendered relationships. It is difficult to make a technology-empowerment argument though this. What is perhaps most interesting is that it shows how we need to start thinking about digital technologies as producing new ecosystems that reconfigure our understanding of who we are and the roles we play in developing social relationality. The digital natives in these stories are not merely the children – though their embodied interface produces startling insights into how personal relationships with technologies are produced. The men who have access to the phones and have mastered digital literacy in navigating through these phones, the women who become the last-mile consumers who have found creative ways of staying connected despite their lack of access, and the children who become the nodes in this technology-information infrastructure, are all digital natives of a certain kind. They might not have claimed that identity and indeed might never want to. “Salesforce.com won’t disclose exactly how the Influencer algorithm works. It’s more than just tabulating number of posts, though. In fact, workers could actually be penalized for sheer volume, if colleagues don’t consider their content useful. “We don’t want people being noisy,” Chatter general manager Kendall Collins tells Fast Company. Instead, the algorithm looks at things like how many Likes a post gets or how often it’s re-shared. “It surveys all the activities you’re involved in and weighs them differently,” King says. He adds that managers wanting to evaluate worker influence will probably want to combine the machine-generated score with the output of an explicit recognition system, like Salesforce.com’s newly acquired Rypple, which allows employees to give each other badges for great work. ATTENTION ECONOMY VIGNETTES CHAPTER 1: MA

Attention Economy Vignettes I recently posted a long excerpt from +Bruce Sterling‘s wonderful novel _The Caryatids_ as an example of a functioning #attentioneconomy in action. Sterling’s lucid prose highlights many of the functional aspects of an attention economy, including the central of role of experts and self-directed education, and the importance of Augmented Reality overlays for demonstrating the fruits of economic labor (through a visualization Sterling calls “Glory”). I’d hope that we might start preparing for an Attention Economy in time to prevent such devastation, if at all possible. For this reason, I’ve been thinking about ways to visualize and present the Attention Economy in a more compelling way than my long, dense academic discussions. The easier it is to imagine alternative organizational structures, the faster people will start preparing for its eventuality. To that end, I’ve started compiling a series of science fiction shorts describing a not-so-distant future that operates on its basic principles. I’m pretty busy with my summer job at the moment, but I have a few of these shorts in the bag and I’ll be posting them over the next few weeks to get some feedback and maybe start some discussions. Our tribe has grown to include millions of people and we no longer farm our own fields but instead count on others to provide us with the goods required for life. From water and food to jobs and justice, we depend on the web that society has built. We have outsourced many tasks of our early tribal lifestyle to the mob and the mob or system has offloaded many tasks onto technology. We are now at a point where an EMP blast would cause a mass extinction. In a small tribe you are directly connected with the consequences of your actions. You need to catch a fish and know how to make a fire because you want to feed your family tonight. No bosses, no money, action > reaction. A COMPLEX SYSTEMS SCIENCE APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE…

A Complex Systems Science Approach to Healthcare Costs and Quality by Y. Bar-Yam at NECSI “There is a mounting crisis in delivering affordable healthcare in the US. For decades, key decision makers in the public and private sectors have considered cost-effectiveness in healthcare a top priority. Their actions have focused on putting a limit on fees, services, or care options. However, they have met with limited success as costs have increased rapidly while the quality isn’t commensurate with the high costs. A new approach is needed. Here we provide eight scientifically-based steps for improving the healthcare system. The core of the approach is promoting the best use of resources by matching the people and organization to the tasks they are good at, and providing the right incentive structure. Harnessing costs need not mean sacrificing quality. Quality service and low costs can be achieved by making sure the right people and the right organizations deliver services. As an example, the frequent use of emergency rooms for non-emergency care demonstrates the waste of resources of highly capable individuals and facilities resulting in high costs and ineffective care. Neither free markets nor managed care guarantees the best use of resources. A different oversight system is needed to promote the right incentives. Unlike managed care, effective oversight must not interfere with the performance of care. Otherwise, cost control only makes care more cumbersome. USING PREZI AS A WHITEBOARD IN MY CLASSROOM…

Using Prezi as a Whiteboard In my classroom there is no easy way to both use the chalkboard and the LCD projector at the same time. Although I love chalkboards, today I decided to commit to the projector. I kept a Prezi editing window open, and took notes as I would on a whiteboard. I usually draw pictures and obsessively underline things and couldn’t do that as easily here. However, it resulted in a pretty neat document that worked really great for review at the end of the class day. ICUB LEARNS ARCHERY

Well, this is pretty awesome: You’re actually watching the extent of iCub’s learning process: it took the robot all of 8 trials to figure out how to hit the center of the bullseye. iCub is using a learning algorithm called ARCHER (Augmented Reward Chained Regression), which is optimized for tasks that have an easily definable goal and measurable progression towards that goal. Basically, hitting the center of the target equates to a maximum reward, and the algorithm builds off of past experience to estimate how to alter iCub’s hand positions to improve the aim of the arrow. In this case, the distance between iCub and the target is only 3.5 meters, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be scaled up to larger distances. Or bigger arrows. Or rocket launchers. This robot experiment was conducted by Dr. Petar Kormushev, Dr. Sylvain Calinon, and Dr. Ryo Saegusa at the Italian Institute of Technology (the same guys who brought you robot pancake flipping). GIMME ROBOT WILL CREEP YOU OUT UNTIL YOU GIVE IT MONEY

Have you ever felt uncomfortable asking people for money? So has Chris Eckert, so he built a robot to help him out, named Gimme: Gimme is a two axis numerically controlled sculpture that pans a room looking for people. Once found, the machine tracks a person, cajoles them into making a donation, and resumes scanning the room searching for potential donors. The sculpture is controlled by an Arduino Pro Mini. Stepper motors are driven by two Pololu A4983 Stepper Motor Driver Carriers. The microcontroller, stepper drivers, and sensors are all mounted on a custom circuit board made with Eagle CAD. While I absolutely love the construction of this robot, I’m not quite sure what to make of the bare eyeball… Part of me says “cute!” Part of me says “get it away from me!” But for the purposes of this robot, that’s probably perfect: first it draws you in, and then when it’s too late, you have to pay it to get it to leave you alone. IROBOT PATENT SHOWS ‘CELESTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM’

iRobot has had a virtual monopoly on the consumer robot vacuum market since they introduced the Roomba in 2002. But with some new competition this year, there’s now a real perception problem when consumers compare a Roomba’s cleaning technique to that of Mint or the Neato XV-11, which are able to localize themselves, map a room, and clean in straight efficient lines. Irrespective of whether ’smart’ cleaning is more or less effective (and iRobot argues convincingly that its unstructured patterns do in fact clean better), Roomba’s pseudo-random behaviors seem less sophisticated and ‘dumber’ by comparison. The Roomba, which (I would argue) hasn’t seen a significant upgrade since the release of the third generation 5xx series in 2007, is going to need some kind of upgrade, because consumers are now expecting household robots to be smarter. This patent application, last updated in April of this year and unearthed by Robot Stock News, seems to suggest that iRobot is at least considering adding localization to their line of cleaning robots. The patent is for a “Celestial Navigation System for an Autonomous Robot,” and works by using (and stop me if you’ve heard this one) a projector to put IR spots on your ceiling that the robot uses to figure out where it is. Yep, sounds a lot (suspiciously a lot) like NorthStar, used by Mint. And just like NorthStar, if iRobot implements this system it’s going to mean that you’d need a projector in every room you want cleaned. The Celestial Navigation patent does talk about a bunch of potentially interesting features… For example, each room gets its own ID, so you could schedule your robot to clean specific rooms at specific times, and then monitor its progress on a remote. PANASONIC’S HAIR WASHING ROBOT

This hair washing robot from Panasonic made the rounds last week, but I figured it was one of those things where good video was important, and DigInfo News came through today. One thing that the video doesn’t elaborate on is how the robot is actually scanning the user’s head shape in three dimensions to figure out just the right amount of pressure to apply, and it’ll use that shape to remember who you are and what shampoo and massage settings you like. In general, Panasonic is trying to create a robotic infrastructure to help Japan (and the rest of the world) deal with an aging population that’s going to need more and more support. DON’T WORRY, ROBOTS NOW GUARDING NUKES IN NEVADA

When you have a 1,360 square mile military facility that needs patrolling, robots are the way to go, or at least that’s the position starting to be adopted by the US Army. Why? Simple: using mobile robots instead of permanent infrastructure (like fixed cameras and motion detectors) saves $6 million in up-front costs plus an additional $1 million a year in maintenance. The robots being used at the Hawthorne Army Depot (which stores tens of millions of cubic feet of low-level radioactive waste) are somewhat unsexily called MDARS (Mobile Detection Assessment Response Systems). They’re diesel powered, with a top speed of 20 mph, and they can stay on duty for 16 hours. Most of the time, MDARS do random fully autonomous patrols, using RFID tags to check the status of locks and gates. If they notice something out of the ordinary, a human can take over, using cameras, microphones, and speakers to interact with whatever needs interacting with. The bots are currently unarmed, so short of running someone over they can’t do much more than observe, although they are certainly capable of mounting remote controlled weapons. PROGRAM YOUR ROBOT TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED FOR THE ROBOT CENSUS

Do you own a robot? Are you are a robot? Either way, Carnegie Mellon wants to hear from you as part of their 2010 Robot Census. Initially, the idea was to just count up all the robots at CMU (547), but the project has since expanded to all robots. Everywhere. So that they can get proper representation and federal funding, or something. Of course, in order to qualify for the robot census, a robot has to be, uh, a robot. So what’s a robot? According to CMU’s Heather Knight, who’s running the show, “everyone agrees there are 3 minimum requirements. These are the minimum, but not sufficient requirements: They must act in the world, sense the world, and they need to have computation.” The “minimum but not sufficient” bit is in there to preclude registering a thermostat as a robot, but this brings up all kinds of questions about just what exactly a robot is. GOOGLE’S AUTONOMOUS CAR TAKES TO THE STREETS

Remember 5 years ago when a bunch of robotic cars managed to navigate through the desert all by themselves? And remember 3 years ago when a bunch of robotic cars managed to navigate through a (fake) urban area all by themselves? Well, today it’s the future, and autonomous robotic cars from Google have already logged 140,000 miles on busy, complex city streets and highways with only occasional human intervention, and 1,000 miles without any human control whatsoever. Writing about this kind of thing makes me all tingly, because ever since I saw that autonomous Passat park itself at Stanford a year ago, it’s become clear that robotic cars aren’t some far-off futuristic dream, but that this technology is actually achievable in the near term. I mean, consider how much time you spend in your car effectively doing nothing, and then think about how much things would change if you could be productive (or asleep) instead. And of course, it’s not just that: autonomous cars have the potential to reduce traffic by driving closer together, drastically improve gas mileage with cooperative drafting, and (most importantly) significantly reduce the number of car accidents, which cause 1.2 million fatalities worldwide and exponentially more injuries plus untold emotional (and financial) trauma. Besides the big honkin’ LIDAR system mounted on the roof, the rest of the equipment is fairly low-key… There’s a position sensor mounted on the wheels, some small radar sensors in the bumpers, and a video camera in front of the rear view mirror to detect stop lights, stop signs, pedestrians, and bicyclists. PRESIDENT OBAMA LIKES ROBOTS (YAY!)

On Monday, Barack Obama opened the (first ever) White House Science Fair with the following: “One of the great joys of being President is getting to meet young people like all of you — and some of the folks in the other room who I just had a chance to see some of their exhibits and the work that they were doing. It’s inspiring — and I never miss a chance to see cool robots when I get a chance.” Wow, me neither! Also introduced at the event was a new DARPA initiative to give resources to students to help them build those aforementioned robots.
